Ego Trip’s Sacha Jenkins was on the show yesterday to discuss their new reality-contest show Miss Rap Supreme. At the end of the segment, Faith asked Mr. Jenkins what the next unappreciated segment of the hip hop community will be featured in an Ego Trip show, and this was his reply:
“Gay rappers. Hip hop is totally, totally 100% gay, but not openly gay. Hip hop is pretty homoerotic. I mean, everyone’s got their shirts off, guys are in music videos with lots of beautiful women but they’re standing nowhere near them, and the women aren’t lathering the bodies of the men, they’re lathering cars.”

Here at Fair Game, the Obama Girl phenomenon ended before it began. It was one of those videos that is so desperate for recognition, so blatantly self-aware that you wanted not to like it. And luckily, that wasn’t terribly hard to do. But there is a new Obama Girl video featuring still Presidential candidate Mike Gravel (and Fair Game guest), and it’s awesome. Please to watch.
The Bathed in Glory got a little carried away and wrote an extra one this week, so here it is. Imagine the sanctimonious voice in your head.
The New England Patriots football team, which is trying to trademark the phrase “19 and 0”, which would make sense if their record last year wasn’t 18 and 1. Wait Patriots, were you planning to make t shirts that say “Damn, we sure were close to going 19 and 0.”? Or“If we hadn’t screwed up the Super Bowl, we’d be 19 and 0 right now.” Cause you’d need a trademark for those.
Documentarian Errol Morris is on Fair Game tonight talk about his newest film, Standard Operating Procedure, which is about the abuse of prisoners at Abu Ghraib. But if you’re looking for some more upbeat Errol Morris material, he’s got an extensive archive of his commercial work on his website.
He’s done commercials for Nike, The Ad Counsel, Southern Comfort… but he’s done literally dozens for America’s favorite beer in a clear bottle: High Life. The commercials appeal to mid-western, masculine ideals. But lets be honest, they’re probably geared at 20 year olds with ironic mustaches.
Don’t get me wrong - the latest imagining of Battlestar Galactica (SciFi) is really, really good. But why must we sit through a dozen horrible, recycled shows for the occasional good one?
And they’re doing it again. This time is British Sci-Fi series, Blake’s 7. Even as a kid I knew this one sucked. But the BBC has greenlit two sixty-minute scripts for a “potential event series.”
The new Battlestar is good, but not BECAUSE it’s an old idea. The old Battlestar is bad. Really bad (sorry, Dirk Benedict). It’s good because the writing, acting and direction are good. So please, don’t re-hash all these old, bad shows. Come up with an original idea and really invest in it. You’ll be fine.
Normally, when rock bands visit the Fair Game studio, they don’t exactly dress up, mainly because uh, well, it’s radio. The Santa Cruz-based indie pop band James Rabbit were an exception to the rule — they came dressed up in some colorful homemade costumes. Luckily, we have footage of their performance, and so you can check out their outlandish attire.
Garth Jennings’ new movie Son of Rambow is brilliant, but the same can be said of much of his work as half of the music video making duo Hammer & Tongs. After the jump, we have a sampling of some of their best work.
